George "Djordge" Baros

George Baros passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the age of 91 years. He will be greatly missed by his dear wife of 62 years Mary; three daughters and their husbands, Marija (Timothy Stonhouse), Ana (Giuseppe Filippo Imbalzano), and Petra (Brian Barker); and five grandchildren Matthew, Benjamin and Danica Stonhouse, Trivun and Madeline Barker. He also leaves behind his dear brother Lazo in Serbia and many close nieces, nephews, family and friends in Canada, United States, Great Britain, Netherlands, Serbia and Slovenia. He was predeceased by his father Trivun, mother Mara, brothers Pero and Mile, and sister Cvita. George was born in the small village of Zaglavica near Glamoc in Bosnia. His life changed when WWII broke out and he joined the Royal Yugoslav Army under the command of Gen. Dragoljub (Draza) Mihailovic (Ravna Gora Cetniks) and fought to maintain freedom and democracy in his country for all Yugoslavs. George had to eventually leave his country and as a member of the Royal Yugoslav Army served under British Command in Naples. From Italy he went to Germany and from there he eventually went to England after the war. After a few years of working at various jobs, he married a young English nurse and in the 1950’s they emigrated to Edmonton with their young daughter. The family settled in the McKernan area and two more daughters followed. George trained as a barber in Edmonton and for many years worked at the Garneau Barber Shop on the corner of 109 Street and Whyte Avenue. When a new shopping centre opened in Lansdowne, George bought his own business and opened Lansdowne Barber Salon and worked there until his retirement in 1990. George had many faithful customers and many families continued to come to him for haircuts for three generations. He enjoyed meeting people from diverse cultures and backgrounds and he had a great ability for remembering the names and faces of all he met. Many customers became his good friends. In his retirement years George frequented the Strathcona Place Senior Centre and Southgate Centre mall, where he kept in touch with many of his former customers. In his daily walks around Southgate he would stop to chat to all he knew and those he didn’t know would soon become included in his daily salutations. His walks would end with a coffee shared with friends. George will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A visitation will be held from 7:30pm to 9:00pm on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Serenity Funeral Service, 5311 – 91 Street NW, Edmonton, AB A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 9, 2015 at St. Paul’s United Church, 11526 – 76 Avenue, Edmonton, AB The family would like to thank the staff at the General Hospital Ward 9C and Continuing Care 11Y for their care and support of George. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
