Mr Harry Bauer

Harry was born on June 3, 1929 to Elizabeth and Alexander Bauer in Stony Plain. He was raised on a farm just two miles north of Stony Plain with his 3 brothers and 2 sisters. The family faithfully attended the Evangelical and Reformed Church which was a German speaking congregation. He first attended the country school at Glory Hills, about a mile from their farm home, before attending and graduating from Memorial High School in Stony Plain. After graduation, he planned to go into the ministry and train to become a pastor. It would have been necessary for him take his training in Wisconsin. But given the concerns of his family, it would have required him to move a great distance away from home and he chose not to do so. Instead, he moved to Calgary where he studied accounting and worked for an oil company. While in Calgary, Harry met Helen Schmidt, who was working as a bank teller. They were married a short time later on June 22, 1963, and moved to Edmonton. Harry and Helen were blessed with two precious children, Arlene and Jim. Helen became a stay-at-home mom, while Harry began working for the Government of Alberta. Harry was employed for 28 years in various finance and administration roles with the government. Because of his expertise and conscientious work ethic, he received many promotions. In his leisure time, Harry was an avid golfer. Harry was actively involved with Lendrum Mennonite Brethren Church. He held various positions, including treasurer for the church as well as at the Conference level. Harry had strong family values. Next to his faith in God, his wife and children were top priority. In the summer they holidayed in the Okanagan and took several winter trips to California and Hawaii. In1987 Harry retired from his employment as he and Helen planned to travel. Sadly, in 1988, Helen suffered an aneurism and passed away a year later. Harry and the children were deeply saddened by Helen`s untimely death. In 1991, God blessed Harry with a second marriage to Jean Penner, a gifted Edmonton classroom teacher and reading consultant. Between the years 1997 and 2001, Harry was further blessed with three loving grandchildren, Devan, Sheldon and Dayna. Harry and Jean spent many hours together with them creating lasting memories. Harry and Jean also took many holidays, including numerous cruises, trips to warm climates, and spent seven winters in Arizona. After a short illness, Harry passed away on December 30 at the University of Alberta Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Amelia, Lydia, Carl and Bill. He is survived by his wife Jean; daughter Arlene Bauer (Barry Yanosik), son Jim Bauer (Shelley), grandchildren Devan, Sheldon and Dayna. His only surviving sibling is Reuben Bauer. He is also survived by many other extended family.
