Mr Louis Hyndman

HYNDMAN, Louis Davies, O.C., Q.C., LLB (Hon) With deep sorrow, the family announces Lou’s passing on Sunday, November 24, 2013. Born on July 1, 1935 in Edmonton, he is survived by his loving wife Mary (Maclennan), children Jennifer (Alison), Bruce (Alexis) and Peter (Pamela), and his cherished granddaughter, Madeline Ruth Hyndman Mountz. Lou attended the University of Alberta, where he became a fourth generation lawyer and a budding politician as President of the U of A Student council in 1958/59 during his final year of law. His time at the U of A foreshadowed a political career that would commence in 1967 at age 32. Running alongside an underdog slate of new faces under the banner of Progressive Conservatives, Lou’s chances were slim as he contested a Social Credit incumbent and a government that had been in place for more than two decades. The Socred government did renew its mandate, but six keen new faces, under the leadership of Peter Lougheed appeared in the opposition, Lou among them. In 1971, the PCs won a majority and he became Minister of Education and House Leader. Subsequently, he served as Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Provincial Treasurer, retiring from the political field in 1986. He returned to the office of Field Law and assumed directorships of a number of companies. His keen interest in public policy led to his appointments as Chair of the Premier’s Commission on Future Health Care for Albertans (1987- 1989) and as Chair of the Canadian Royal Commission on National Passenger Transportation in the 21st Century (1989-1992). At the municipal level, he Chaired the Alberta Capital Region Governance Review from 1998–2000, exploring ways in which Edmonton and its surrounding region could collaborate and coordinate vision, services and future planning. The University of Alberta was always close to his heart and he was honored to be elected to serve as its Chancellor from 1994 – 1998. In short, Lou devoted much of his career to public and community service and was committed to making a difference in hopes of making the world a better place. Lou was devoted to his family and we will miss his gentle manner, his wisdom and his wonderful sense of humour. We remember him with great love and respect. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, December 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the Myer Horowitz Theatre in the Student Union’s Bldg. at the University of Alberta, 8900-114 St., Edmonton T6G 2J7 Flowers are gratefully declined but if individuals so desire, donations to a bursary for students in financial need would be greatly appreciated.
