Marilyn Ann Miller

It is with heavy hearts, our family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Marilyn Miller on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the age of 80. Her memory will be cherished by her children: David (Cathy), Kathy (Duane), Sheri (Marc), Michael (Christy); her brother Bob (Betty); her grandchildren: Mark, Greg, Blane, Crystal, Jessica, Kristin, Nicole, Brittany and Ashley; her great grandchildren: Hannah, Brody, Lucas, and Hailey; and her close friends Shirley, Sandi, Val and Ann. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Keith Cowell and grandson Trevor. Marilyn was born on February 15, 1934 and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. At age 11 she began what would be her longest friendship with her dear friend Shirley. Marilyn graduated from Nepeon High School in the spring of 1952 and directly went to work for the RCMP in as an administrative assistant. Marilyn relocated to Moosejaw, SK, and married her former neighbor and friend, Keith Cowell. Keith joined the Canadian Armed Forces and as a young military couple, she and Keith lived in multiple locations in Canada and Germany. During their time together, Marilyn and Keith saw the birth of their children, David, Kathy and Sheri. While deployed overseas, Marilyn`s life was filled with travel and adventure as she and her family explored and experienced Europe. It was during this time the seed was planted for her lifelong support of the Canadian Arms Forces. While stationed in Germany, Marilyn`s life was forever altered when she was widowed by the sudden passing of Keith. After some time, Marilyn then moved to New Westminster, BC, and later re-married. The following year saw the birth of her youngest son, Michael. Marilyn then moved to a small acreage outside of Camrose, Alberta, during this time Marilyn worked in various administrative roles. Marilyn greatly enjoyed her life on a small farm filled with animals. She formed many lasting friendships and was well known in the community. Marilyn then moved again to Edmonton, at which time she became involved with what would become her passion, adult literacy. Marilyn volunteered, and then worked for a non-profit organization, Project Adult Literacy Society (PALS). Marilyn’s tireless efforts here saw her influence and improve countless lives by teaching mature students to read, as well as develop other instructors to be able to do the same. It was during this time that Marilyn met Val, Ann and Sandi, who would affectionately call themselves `The Four Musketeers` and would share many adventures. Over the years Marilyn celebrated the births of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren who became the light of her life. Marilyn will be missed and remembered fondly by those who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Marilyn's Life will be held at Serenity Funeral Service Leduc Chapel, 4702A 51 Avenue, Leduc, Alberta on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 2:00 pm.
