Robert Earle Mayne

Robert Mayne passed away December 30, 2014 with family by his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Teresa; his children Carol (Andy), Ann (Patrick), and Jonathan (Tara); and his cherished grandchildren, Tessa and Connor. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Marguerite, and his brothers, Donald and Ronald, of Woodmore, Manitoba. Bob was born in Vita, Manitoba, and grew up on a small mixed farm in the Woodmore area, south of Winnipeg. He attended the University of Manitoba, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1958 and Master of City Planning in 1968. His thesis on Community Planning in the Arctic Environment reflected his lifelong dedication to land use planning and northern communities. While he was on summer breaks from University Bob worked for Geodetic Survey of Canada, and met Teresa (nee Kamieniecki) when the survey crew passed through Manning, Alberta. Married in 1958, they spent their first years together in Ottawa and started their family. They moved regularly for school or work, spending time in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary, before finally settling in Edmonton in 1969. Bob worked for UMA (Underwood McLellan & Associates) and AECOM. He provided professional surveying, planning, engineering, and land related services to government, land development, and resource based clients in western and northern Canada. Travel was an ongoing part of Bob’s work, whether it was flying into remote northern communities or field checks closer to home. His family, friends and associates are proud of the lasting impacts he made to the public landscape over his long career and through his many projects. The lure of the family farm consistently drew Bob back to the homesteads in Manning and Woodmore, and ensured his children had many cherished memories with extended family. Bob also expressed his connection to his roots through documentation of the family history and shared his reserved sense of humour through the many cards uniquely created to celebrate special occasions. Bob was a dedicated husband, a mentor to his children, a proud Papa to his grandkids, and a valued friend. A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at a future date.
