Mr. Kenneth "Ken" Eugene Bollinger

Kenneth passed away at home in Edmonton in the arms of his loving wife with family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Frieda, son Trent (Sue) and family Megan, Nathan and Nicholas; daughter Cindy and family Ben and Melissa; and son Devin (Edna) and family Marvin and Victor. He was predeceased by siblings Jean, Lloyd and Darwin and leaves to mourn sisters Iva Wright, Myrtle Peters, Carolyn Langrish and brother Vernon. Kenneth graduated from Cabri High School in 1953, worked as a mechanic for his dad for two years and then as a compressor system operator in the Swift Current Oilfields for six years. He married Frieda in 1957 and started raising a family in his self-built mobile home in the Success Oilfields. They moved to Saskatoon with their two children, Trent and Cindy, in 1962 when Kenneth enrolled in the Electrical Engineering Program at the U of S. He graduated with distinction in 1966 and went on to obtain an MSc degree. Devin was born April 28, 1966. Kenneth joined the U of S EE faculty in 1967 as an Assistant Professor where he taught courses and carried out research in areas of power system analysis and feedback control. He supervised a number of graduate students and published papers on innovative test methods for controlling large power generators. In 1976 he took a sabbatical leave, and along with his family, spent a year at UMIST in Manchester, England. He was offered a position at the University of Alberta in 1980 and joined the EE and Digital Computing Dept. in Edmonton as Professor and recipient of the Power System Chair. While at the U of A he continued consulting for power companies in Canada, the US and Overseas. He developed computer- based test equipment and simulation software that allowed tuning feedback controllers on large multi-machine power systems with hydro and steam powered electrical generators. He also carried on an active research program at the U of A and presented courses to Engineers in power companies world- wide. He started a private Consulting Company and developed microprocessor based feedback controllers that were installed at power plants and digital test equipment that were used by other Consultants. He travelled extensively and used his expertise in resolving complex control system problems for electrical power companies. Frieda travelled with him on many occasions and they made many friends related to the business over the years. Kenneth was a member of IEEE, APEGA, past member of CEA and a member of the IEEE Power Generation Committee. He received awards from IEEE in 1979, 1983, and 1996 for contributions toward developing guides for testing and modeling large electric generators to improve performance. He enjoyed sports of all types and participated in baseball, curling and hockey while his family was at home. He loved working on cars and going to stock-car races and hunting with his sons. He enjoyed camping and travelling with his family and he was in his element driving his motorboat during fishing, water-skiing and tubing with family and friends. Spring fishing trips to Northern Saskatchewan were a favourite outing. The annual camping trips to Cypress Hills with the large family of brothers and sisters and in-laws were his best loved holidays. He loved country and western music, non-fiction books, action movies, documentary films and made concessions to Frieda by attending the symphony, musicals and live theatre in Edmonton over the years. Kenneth requested to not have a funeral. His family conveys their thanks to medical staff at the UAH and Cross Cancer Institute for adding a few years to his life and for their kind care. Donations to the Alberta Cancer Foundation would be appreciated.
